What is MIPI I3C?

MIPI I3C (Improved Inter-Integrated Circuit) is a sensor and actuator interface standard developed by the MIPI Alliance. It combines the best features of I2C and SPI into a single, unified interface that offers higher data rates (up to 12.5 Mbps in SDR mode), lower power consumption, and in-band interrupts while maintaining backward compatibility with I2C devices. What is the difference between SDR and HDR modes in I3C?

SDR (Single Data Rate) is the base I3C transfer mode operating at up to 12.5 Mbps. HDR (High Data Rate) modes provide faster transfers: HDR-DDR (Double Data Rate) reaches up to 25 Mbps, HDR-TSP (Ternary Symbol Pure-bus) and HDR-TSL use ternary encoding for higher throughput, and HDR-BT (Bulk Transport) is optimized for large data transfers. All I3C devices support SDR, while HDR modes are optional.

What is the difference between an I3C Controller and an I3C Target?

An I3C Controller initiates communication on the bus, assigns dynamic addresses, and manages data transfers. An I3C Target responds to the controller's requests. Many modern MCUs and processors can function as both Controller and Target, giving designers maximum flexibility in system architecture.
Which I3C specification versions exist?

The main I3C specification versions are v1.0 (the original release), v1.1 (adding features like HDR-BT mode), v1.1.1, and v1.2. There is also I3C Basic, a subset specification designed for simpler target devices like temperature sensors and PMICs. Most devices in the market today implement I3C v1.0 or I3C Basic v1.0.
